When are the soccer seasons and how many?
We have 2 seasons; fall that begins in August and runs through the end of October and a spring season that begins at the end of March and ends in the first week of June.

When can my child start playing soccer?
The club has an Under-6 division; players must turn 4 by September 1st to be able to play.

What is the difference between recreational and competitive soccer?
Players have the option of playing recreational or trying out to play competitive soccer when they move to the Under-11 age group. The differences between the two levels are:

  • Level of commitment at the competitive level is greater as far as the number of practices and travel to tournaments (some of which will be out of state)
  • Cost is more as teams travel, purchase uniforms (including warm-ups and bags) offer more contect with provessional coaching
  • Competitive soccer is for those players that have already demonstrated a passion for the sport and/or demonstrated a good skill level
  • Generally play time is not guaranteed at tournaments

How can I register my son or daughter for play?
You can call gthe registrar at 276-9202 or simply look on this site for registration forms prior to the start of the fall and spring seasons. These can also be found at both Soccer Connections locations, Urbandale Public Library and Urbandale Parks and Rec. Also current club members will be mailed a registration form via a club newsletter.

How are teams formed?
At the youngest age groups (Under-6) teams are formed on a random basis in order to make the team rosters equal numbers. From this age group onwards if a player signs-up before the registration deadline they will be placed on the same team. Any new players will be added to teams that are lacking in numbers. When players reach the Under-11 and older age groups players can request to be placed on a team (this applies to recreational players only, those wanting to play on a competitive team have to try out).

How many players play on the field and how many players are on a roster?
Age goup on field, On roster

  • Under 6 = 3 (no keeper), 6 (maximum)
  • Under 8 = 4 (no keeper), 8 (maximum)
  • Under 10 = 8 (including keeper), 14 (maximum)
  • Under 11 and older = 11 (including keeper), 18 (maximum)

Is there a mixture of male and female players on teams?
Typically at the younger age groups (Under-6 and Under-8) the teams are comprised of both girls and boys. At the Under-10 age group teams start to form all-girls or all-boys teams. However, some girls still play on teams that the majority of players are boys. At the Under-11 age groups and older the teams are either all-girl or co-ed (may contain girls). A boy cannot play on an all-girls team.

What leagues to the teams play in?
The Under-6 and Under-8 teams play all their games against other Urbandale Soccer Club teams of the same age group. The Under-10 teams play in the league against local clubs such as Johnston, Waukee, Ankeny and West Des Moines. Under-11 through Under-19 recreational teams play in the Greater Des Moines League. All competitive teams play in the Iowa Premier Soccer League (IPSL).

Who do I call if I have a question not answered in this section?

How can I become a volunteer?
On the club registration form there is a section on Volunteers where people can donate their time in all aspects of running the club from coaching to fundraising. The club is constantly looking and needing volunteers. You can also contact the registrar at 276-9202.
